Web Page Design: From Planning to Posting
Posting your Site

Posting your site on the web:

Posting your pages on the web is simply a matter of moving them to a computer called a web server, which is a computer that is connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. It stores your pages and images and then allows people using different web browsers to view them whenever they want.

Testing your pages:

Before you move your pages to a web server, you'll want to double-check to make sure you don't have any missing images or broken links. Some web editing programs have a site manager that will check your pages and help you reconnect to any missing images or broken links.

  • Before posting, proof your pages by checking spelling, grammar, and phrasing.
  • View your page in  the web editor's Preview  mode as well as in multiple browsers.
  • Test all of you links.

Do you need a domain name?

A domain name is URL like "www.berea.edu" or "www.heartlandcenter.info", which you can use to refer to your website. There are a number of very good reasons for having a domain name:

  • If you ever change your web host, your domain name can go with you. Your regular visitors or customers who knew your site name would not have to be informed about a change of URL.
  • Having a domain name gives you credibility and respectability.
  • If you get a good domain name that describes your company, people can remember the name easily and can return to your site without having to consult their documents.

Numerous domain name registrars will allow you to register your domain name for a small annual fee.

Finding a web server:

You will need to find a web server able to host your site. You may be able to find a host that will post your pages for free in exchange for placing advertisements on your site - or you may have to pay a small monthly fee for an site without ads. If you choose to pay for your own domain name, then you may want to use the same company to pay a monthly fee for web-hosting as well.

Some Free Alternative Hosts
(All post advertising on your site.)

Uploading your pages:

Once you've found a host for your pages, you will need to move your pages to their server. The processing of moving files from your computer to the web server is called uploading. To upload, you may need a special free software called an "ftp client". Many web editors come with their own uploading software.
